At 110' long and pumping out 7500 hp, the worlds largest and most powerful diesel locomotive, PW's SSD40-3X sits by the engine service facility for last minute inspections before heading out to haul an 82 car mixed freight train ... all on its own.

Nicknamed "Bertha" the model is actually fictitious, there is no locomotive like this in the real world. It's simply too big for practical usage, but the beauty of modeling is, you can throw out rules of the real world and do as you see fit. I "kitbashed" the model from five others, and in the photo, it sits on my own locomotive service yard (yes, I built and decorated it too) which is connected to my local club's modular railroad layout.

Many people don't view model railroading as art, but I strongly disagree. A painter uses a canvas, brush and paints to create a scene, while we do the same but using wood, plaster, glue, paint, electronics, foams, and many other items too numerous to list. The difference is, a painter's scene is 2 dimensional, while ours is 3.

Whoa, that is so cool! You actually made a model locomotive. Sweet.

Makes me think back to when I was younger and I had my own setup like this on a 4'x8' table. *sighs* Had to take it down tho' 'cuz of space considerations and all. Still have all the stuff left over tho'. Maybe someday...

Yeah, I built it, it was fun. Took about two weeks from start to finish, it has gotten a lot of attention at shows. And just so you know, space is one of the "big three" road blocks to nearly everyone in the hobby. The other two being time and money ... as in there is never enough. :D

Wow, thats insane. A little question though, if you did, how were you able to get all those wheels linked to the motor? I would really like to see what's under the hood of that model if you could post a pic of it.

Never let a AT-ST ride a Y-Wing like a surfboard.

I like it. I was always partial to the Union Pacific and Southern Pacific U50Ds, just as large. :D

Thanks man. I looked through your gallery and saw that you had a Firebird. And I also saw that it was flattened. :| Now, Firebirds of all kinds have always been my absolute favorite vehicles since I first saw Smokey and the Bandit when I was a kid, so as a Firebird fanatic, I have to ask...

WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED?! :omfg:

Rainy day, I was going up a tight clover leaf onramp that had a short merging lane, so I accelerated while coming out of the corner and lost it, hand slipped off steering wheel and car's rear corner hit the bridge. $7,000 in body work just to fix, I only had $50 at the time and couldn't afford it so I sold it to a junkyard, since I couldn't keep it at the house. Junkyard took out most everything leaving the shell, and crushed it some 6 months later.

Damage

Looking to get a GTA once I can afford one.
